Although the dynamics of these markets are different the technical aspects are very similar in that the basic criterion is to reduce the relative humidity in an enclosed space to a level below 40%. This is to protect the contents from both direct moisture damage and bacterial mould.

It is widely accepted that if the relative humidity is reduced below 40%, moisture damage is negated and mould growth is not sustainable. Above 50%, direct moisture damage in the shipping container from cargo sweat is significant as a result from the formation of condensation on the walls and ceiling of the container.
