Container shipping is the favorite method of most exporter due to its low cost. However, we will encounter the problem of getting wet by sea. Not every time by sea, you will encounter serious losses. In some cases, the first few times were normal, and by the sixth and seventh times, serious losses were caused by moisture damage. Many people are wondering, how could cargo get wet when I put the cargo in a tightly sealed container? Where these moisture come from?

  • the containers are not totall sealed. All the containers will be wet from the loading period and the cargo itself. The structure of the container determines the existence of the gap, especially near the door. Good system protection measures can effectively prevent the goods from being damaged and the economic loss caused by the moisture. When exporting goods, you need to use a container. Please check the container systematically first. Inspect container doors, walls, floors, and tops for obvious holes, gaps, and breakage. Keep the container dry and clean.

  • where does the water in the container come from? moisture in the air, the cargo itself, packaging materials (cartons, wooden boxes, etc.), pallets, the wooden floor of the container, and container leakage. The International Container Charterers Association states that the moisture content of container wooden floors cannot exceed 14%. In fact, the average moisture content of containers still in use at many ports is 18%, and even the moisture content exceeds 25%. The main component of the container floor is cork, which has a high moisture content. Some heavy things have to be in wooden boxes. The cargo itself, such as cotton and linen products, palm products, etc., also has a high moisture content. Never use freshly washed, hot and humid containers. Use dry containers. The pallets and other wood products used in all containers must be dry. The relative humidity should not exceed 12%. You can use a humidity detection portable device (Humidity Detector, testing the moisture content of packaging materials. Pay special attention to the storage of containers, pallets and corner protection.

In fact, in the ocean environment, the container is like a large steamer. When sealed, the temperature inside the container will be more than 10 degrees higher than the outside temperature, and the temperature and humidity of the ocean will change drastically. When the goods are transported from low temperature areas to high temperature areas, or the storage environment of the goods suddenly changes from cold to hot, the moisture in the pallets, wooden boxes, etc. will also be evaporated, and the water vapor in the air will be on the surface of the goods or on their packaging. When condensation forms water, the cargo itself will also emit water. When a container enters a low temperature area from a high temperature area, its internal ambient temperature changes from high temperature to low temperature to reach the dew point temperature, and water vapor will condense into water droplets and condense on the top and surrounding walls of the container, and finally drip onto the cargo. This is why the cargo gets wet.

CHUNWANG TIPS:

Please use a container desiccant and take measures to protect against moisture in advance. The purpose is to absorb moisture from the air to reduce the total amount of moisture entering the container. The amount of container desiccant used depends on the type of cargo, the length of the voyage, and the degree of acceptable damage.

Generally, a 20-foot container is recommended to use more than 6 kg container desiccants, such as Chunwang's CODC-91-10 product. Hang the container desiccant on the hanging ring on the inner wall of the container. If the moisture content of the packaging materials in the container is high, if wooden boxes, pallets, etc., the amount of desiccant in the container should be increased. Valuable goods should be well protected and used more. You can also tile some CODD-91-10 container desiccant on the carton.
